Barsey or Varsey is a small town in the north-eastern state of Sikkim in India. Located at an altitude of 10,000ft, Barsey is renowned for its Rhododendron Sanctuary. For the lovers of varied flora, a visit to Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary would actually be a delightful experience. The sanctuary falls in the West Sikkim district and can be accessible by road via Hilley, Dentam or Soreng from Geyzing. If you want to try trekking, it would be an amazing idea to proceed up (4 kms) the hill from Hilley. Varsey is an ideal gateway to spend a relaxing time amidst snow-capped mountains and aromatic flowers providing a refreshing and soothing atmosphere. Varsey Sanctuary also makes an unusual trekking destination in Sikkim. From the months of November to May, the flowers appear in their best form and it is also regarded as the best time to visit this sanctuary.

Visit Uttarey

You can reach Uttarey from Pelling, Gezing or Dentum. On your way you will pass Singsor bridge, said to be the second highest bridge in Asia. The height of Uttarey is about 6600ft. Uttarey is famous for its tranquility and natural beauty. The place provides beautiful view to the Himalayan mountains.

Khecheopalri Lake

About 28kms from Pelling at a height of about 6000ft is Khecheopalri Lake which is the most holy and wish fulfilling. According to Buddhist belief the lake is the emanation of goddess Tara blessed by Guru Rempoche. Local folk tales say the lake got migrated from elsewhere and stayed in the valley which some of the then villagers saw it, therefore, they named the lake Chojoo “The lake that stayed” .

The grand Singshore Bridge is touted as the highest bridge in Sikkim and the second highest gorge bridge in Asia. An architectural brilliance with a length of 198 m, the bridge is built in between two hills. An extremely popular tourist spot, the bridge is about 5 km away from Pelling.

Tashiding monastery

Tashiding is a small village on a hilltop near Pelling. The Tashiding monastery belongs to the Nyingmapa order and is highly revered among the people of Sikkim. Build on the top of the hill and looming over the Rathong and Rangit river, the monastery can be seen from far and wide. It is believed that even a slight glimpse of the monastery can cleanse mortals of all sins.

About 28kms from Pelling and 5kms before Yuksam is Khangchendzonga Waterfalls which is situated at a sharp curve on the road side. The falls being very big in size and equally attractive through out the year, it has become one of the leading tourist spots in west Sikkim.
